Runway 15R Kerf Cut, George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH), Houston Airport System

IEA Inc. successfully completed this project for Houston Airport System – IAH on an accelerated schedule to complete this runway repair project.

IEA developed construction documents and provided construction support services (CSS) to rehabilitate the areas of Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) to the right (west) of the Runway 15R centerline at IAH due to ongoing spalling/cracking.

Preliminary Engineering Report (PER):

IEA met with HAS and the Stakeholders and completed a site visit to assess the issues with spalling/cracking. IEA used these discussions and the data collected from the site visit to develop the PER. The PER clarified the basis of design and provided a layout of alternatives for review by HAS and Stakeholders for approval of the preferred alternative to proceed with final design.

Accelerated Final Design and CSS:

Within a week of HAS approval to proceed with the preferred alternative, HAS informed IEA that the 15R Kerf Cut was declared an emergency repair project on February 10, 2022. The Contractor had been directed to mobilize to start the repair immediately over the weekend on Saturday, February 12, 2022. IEA's design schedule was accelerated at the request of HAS. After reorganizing our staffing and schedule delivery, the team accelerated the schedule and provided the construction documents ahead of schedule and under budget. Thus, HAS’s contractor completed the reconstruction of the RW 15R Kerf Cut repair within 60 days and opened the Runway to traffic on schedule.
