2019 Erosion Control Contract 4, 19-089E, City of Dallas, TX

IEA INC. SERVED AS PRIME CONSULTANT RESPONSIBLE FOR THE MANAGEMENT AND DESIGN OF GABION, TURF-REINFORCING MAT, AND RIP-RAP STRUCTURES TO STABLIZE AND RESTORE 4 CREEK BANK LOCATIONS NEAR CITIZENS HOMES.

IEA’s design was compliant with bank stabilization activities authorized under Section 404 of the Clean Water Act by Nationwide Permit 13.

The 4 gravity gabion walls ranged in length from 50 LF to 200 LF, and in height from 12-ft to 18-ft. IEA’s design options included opportunities to minimize the size of the walls while ensuring adequate protection of the existing structures.

Holistic project Site solutions:

Through site visits and data collection, IEA noted that erosion had exposed a wastewater lateral and drop structure which were likely to fail. These were outside IEA’s project footprint, so we escalated these concerns to the City.

The City opted to have IEA prepare design solutions which lengthened the wall to provide long-term protection of the lateral and drop structure. IEA’s proactive approach ensured that the City and citizens were protected before any failure occurred.

Stakeholder Coordination:

IEA assisted the City with property owner/homeowner coordination. We contacted each property owner and arranged to meet them in person at their property. We explained the project, shared pictures of recently completed projects with similar issues, and clearly explained access needs to the property.

IEA minimized the project footprint in our design to use existing easements where possible and worked with the City and the property owner on any additional easements.

This process resulted in gaining the property owner’s trust and securing easements, where required.
